Tonstad Public Library

Tonstad asked for a library; the valley needed a room. The building gathers library, youth club, archive and citizen services beneath a single vaulted roof of pale brick, so that every civic errand becomes a reason to stay. There are no turnstiles and very few doors.

Daylight is the primary material. Three north-facing vaults wash the reading terraces with even light; the southern clerestory throws a moving band of sun across the main stair, marking hours the way older churches did. On winter afternoons the whole town can watch the light climb the brick.

Structure carries meaning. Each vault springs from exposed concrete ribs cast on site by local crews — the first major concrete work most of them had poured. The building is, quite literally, made by the town it serves.
