Two waters

The Norwegian Sea is eleven degrees in August; the baths hold thirty-eight. Between those numbers lies the entire architecture: a sequence of black concrete pods anchored at the surf line, each containing one pool, one fire, one view. The building mediates nothing else.

Black pigment in the concrete is not styling. The pods absorb what little winter light exists and shed the spray; after storms they emerge from salt crust unchanged. Inside, the same material warms your shoulder as you lean against it — mass used for comfort instead of monument.

The plan is tidal. At low water guests descend outdoor steps to a stone shelf washed by waves; at high water the route closes and the interior circuit takes over. The building rehearses the coast’s oldest ritual — retreat and return — twice a day, forever.

Architecture usually separates you from weather. Here it hands you over carefully, then takes you back.
